Sober

Construction crane topples over at NUS, killing 3 men

It was really really sobering and saddening to know that while I was doing my work, just a 10mins' walk away, 3 men were dying.

For some reason, the moment I heard about it, I thought of this poem by Rupert Brooke. I don't really know why; it doesn't really fit. But I suppose it's because of the connection between death and soil (construction site), and perhaps, death far away from home.

The Soldier
If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam;
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blessed by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

I guess in sovereignty-conscious Singapore this is the only way we willingly yield land to other people huh. Yay for the Youth Olympics. (which, incidentally, is top CNA Singapore story, much more important than other, less significant events)

Bleaugh being irrational :P
